PARENT/TOT

Classes are geared toward children ages 6 months to 3 years. A parent accompanies the child into the water. This class focuses on safe water exploration with instructor-led songs and games and some one-on-one attention from the instructor. Some of the skills taught are safe water entries and exits with an infant and proper holding and towing techniques. Swim pants are required for all children under 3 years old. Children and parents must shower prior to entering the pool.

GOALS OF THE SKIPPERS PROGRAM:
1. To adjust to a group situation.
2. To learn basic water safety.
3. To increase confidence.
4. To learn basic swimming skills, including floating,
gliding, flutter kicking, arm stroke and side breathing
    (depending on readiness).
5. To increase endurance.
6. To prepare for transition from Skippers to the
    Progressive Swimming Program (ages 6 - 13).

SKIPPERS

Designed for children 3 through 5 years old. All Skipper classes have a ratio of 6 students to 1 instructor. The goal of the Skippers program is to educate both the child and the parent on basic water safety, the value of water fun, and teach the four YMCA Character Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.

Our Skippers are subdivided into two separate levels of skills (not by age, as in the PARENT/TOT):

Pikes:
Beginner Level for those with little or no experience in the water. Participants will learn to put their face in the water, blow bubbles, basic kicking and floating.

Starfish I:
Intermediate Level for those confident in the water without the use of instructional floatation devices or have passed the Pike Level.

Starfish II:
Advanced Level for ages 3 and up. Participants should be able to swim across length of Teaching & Therapy Pool using front crawl unassisted. Also for those who have passed the Starfish I level.
